Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 10, 2026. This policy explains what information PilotPrep ("the App") collects, how it's used, and what choices you have. PilotPrep is a study app for FAA knowledge tests and checkride oral exams.
Who this is
PilotPrep is developed by an independent developer, contactable at ian.holvick@gmail.com. There is no separate corporate entity at this time.
Information we collect
Account information. When you create an account, we collect the email address and password you provide. Passwords are handled entirely by Firebase Authentication (Google) — PilotPrep never sees or stores your password directly.
Study activity and progress. To power features like streaks, XP, levels, and "questions you've gotten wrong," we store:
- Your selected rating track (e.g., Private Pilot, Instrument)
- Quiz and oral-prep answers, including which questions you got right or wrong and when
- Streak count, XP, level, and in-app currency ("Wings") balances
- Reminder time/day preferences
Purchase information. If you subscribe to PilotPrep Pro, purchase and subscription status are processed by RevenueCat and the App Store/Google Play — PilotPrep never sees your payment card details.
AI features (Oral Exam Practice and "AI Explain") (PilotPrep Pro only). If you use the AI oral-exam practice chat or tap "AI Explain" on a quiz question, the text you type — your practice answers, or a follow-up question — along with the relevant question content, is sent to Anthropic, the maker of the Claude AI models, to generate a response. This is used solely to generate that response; it is not used to train Anthropic's models, and your name, email, and payment information are never included in that request. Anthropic's own privacy policy governs how they handle this data. Usage of these features is capped per account each month to keep costs predictable; that cap tracking (a token count, not the conversation content) is stored in your account record.
Notifications. Study reminders are scheduled entirely on your device using your phone's operating system. We do not use push notifications and do not collect a push token or send reminder data to any server.
Crash reporting. If the app crashes or hits an unexpected error, technical details (a stack trace, device model, OS version) are sent to Sentry, a crash-reporting service, so we can find and fix the bug. This is not linked to your account or email — we don't attach your user ID or any study data to crash reports.
What we don't collect
- No location data
- No advertising identifiers, and no ad networks or advertising SDKs
- No analytics SDKs, and no usage tracking beyond the crash reporting described above
- No access to your contacts, photos, or camera
- No payment card numbers (handled by Apple/Google/RevenueCat, never by us)
How information is stored
Account and progress data is stored in Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore and Firebase Authentication), a third-party cloud service. Firestore security rules restrict every user's data so that only that signed-in user can read or write their own records — PilotPrep staff do not access individual user data as a matter of course.
How information is used
We use the information above solely to operate the App: authenticating you, saving your progress, computing your streak/level/mastery, verifying subscription status, and — for Pro subscribers who choose to use them — generating AI oral-exam and question-explanation responses via Anthropic. We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing purposes.
Data retention and deletion
Your data is retained as long as your account exists. You can permanently delete your account and all associated study data at any time from within the app: Settings → Delete account. This immediately and permanently removes your profile and study history — it can't be undone. Deleting your account does not cancel an active subscription; cancel that separately from your device's subscription settings. If you'd rather request deletion by email instead, contact ian.holvick@gmail.com and we will delete your account data within 30 days of a verified request, except where retention is required by law.
Children's privacy
PilotPrep is intended for student pilots, typically ages 16 and up (the minimum age to solo an aircraft in the U.S. is 16). The App is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
